Stairio: Autonomous Staircase Safety Monitoring Robot
activeStairio is a translational robotics project for autonomous staircase inspection and predictive maintenance. The system pairs a handrail-affixed locomotion mechanism with onboard AI vision and multi-sensor perception to deliver routine inspection of public-building staircases at a fraction of the cost of human inspection.
Why it matters. Stairio demonstrates IPNL’s ability to move from navigation and perception research toward deployable robotic systems with a named industry partner, a real deployment site, and recognition from international invention competitions.
Recognition. Awarded Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2026 (news).
Partner. Hotel ICON (PolyU’s teaching hotel) — Stairio is being prepared for deployment on Hotel ICON’s staircase network.
Funding: Hotel ICON Research Scheme (HK$500k, PI)
Started: 2024
