UrbanNav paper receives ION Most Cited Paper Award

The paper “Hong Kong UrbanNav: An open-source multisensory dataset for benchmarking urban navigation algorithms” received the Most Cited Paper Award from NAVIGATION: Journal of the Institute of Navigation. NAVIGATION is the flagship journal of the Institute of Navigation (ION), the premier professional organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of positioning, navigation, and timing. The Most Cited Paper Award recognizes the article that has achieved the highest citation count, reflecting its widespread adoption and influence within the research community.

The UrbanNav dataset, available on GitHub, provides multisensory data collected in the dense urban canyons of Hong Kong, one of the most challenging environments in the world for satellite-based navigation. The dataset includes raw measurements from GNSS receivers, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a 3D LiDAR scanner, and cameras, along with ground truth trajectories obtained via high-precision reference systems. By offering an open-source, standardized benchmark, the dataset enables researchers worldwide to evaluate and compare urban navigation algorithms under realistic and repeatable conditions.

Since its publication, the UrbanNav dataset has been widely adopted by research groups across the navigation, robotics, and autonomous driving communities. The dataset addresses a critical gap in the field by providing real-world urban data with high-quality reference solutions, enabling fair comparisons of positioning algorithms that must contend with signal multipath, non-line-of-sight reception, and other urban-specific challenges. This award affirms the dataset’s role as a foundational resource for advancing urban positioning research.
