Keynote at ICASE 2017

Dr. Li-Ta Hsu delivered a keynote speech at the International Conference on Aeronautical Science and Engineering (ICASE) 2017, held in November 2017. ICASE is a conference that brings together researchers and professionals from the fields of aeronautical engineering, aviation technology, and related disciplines, providing a forum for exchanging advances in aerospace science and its applications to modern transportation systems.

Dr. Hsu’s keynote addressed the challenges and emerging solutions for GNSS-based positioning in urban environments, a topic at the core of IPNL’s research mission. The presentation covered the fundamental difficulties that dense urban canyons pose for satellite navigation, including multipath signal propagation, non-line-of-sight reception, and signal blockage caused by tall buildings. Dr. Hsu highlighted approaches developed at IPNL, such as 3D city model-aided GNSS positioning and multiple faulty measurement exclusion based on consistency checking, which were among the lab’s key published contributions at the time.

The keynote also discussed the broader relevance of reliable urban positioning to aeronautical and aviation applications, particularly for unmanned aerial vehicles operating in complex airspace environments above cities. As UAV operations in urban areas become increasingly common, the need for robust and integrity-assured navigation solutions extends beyond ground vehicles to encompass low-altitude aerial platforms. Dr. Hsu’s invitation to deliver a keynote at ICASE reflected the growing recognition of IPNL’s contributions to positioning and navigation research within the aerospace community.
