eventIPNL Annual Retreat 2019

In July 2019, the IPNL team gathered for its annual retreat, a tradition that combines research planning with team-building activities in a setting away from the everyday lab environment. The retreat offered an opportunity for all members – from principal investigators to incoming research students – to step back from their individual projects and engage with the broader vision and direction of the group. Presentations and discussions covered ongoing work and future research priorities, fostering the kind of cross-project dialogue that can spark new ideas and collaborations.

The retreat programme balanced structured academic sessions with a variety of group activities designed to strengthen interpersonal bonds. Team members participated in outdoor excursions and collaborative challenges that encouraged communication and teamwork in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. These activities provided a valuable counterpoint to the technical discussions, allowing colleagues to connect on a personal level and build the mutual trust that underpins effective research partnerships.

Shared meals were another cornerstone of the retreat experience, with the group coming together around the table to enjoy local cuisine and conversation. For newer members of the lab, these moments offered an accessible way to integrate into the team, while more senior members had the chance to reflect on the group’s progress and share their experience.

The annual retreat remains one of the most valued traditions within IPNL. By dedicating time to both intellectual exchange and social connection, the retreat reinforces the collaborative culture that defines the lab. Members returned from the 2019 edition with clearer research goals, stronger working relationships, and a renewed sense of shared purpose heading into the new academic year.
