eventGNSS Summer School 2017

In July 2017, IPNL launched its inaugural GNSS Summer School, establishing what would become an annual educational programme for students and researchers interested in satellite-based positioning and navigation. Held on the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus, the summer school was designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to Global Navigation Satellite Systems, covering core topics such as satellite orbits, signal propagation, receiver architectures, and positioning algorithms. The programme aimed to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and practical research skills, welcoming participants with diverse academic backgrounds.
The curriculum featured a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions. Participants had the opportunity to work with GNSS receivers and processing software, gaining practical experience in data collection and analysis. These applied components allowed attendees to see how theoretical principles translate into real-world positioning solutions, offering a perspective that is often difficult to obtain through coursework alone. Faculty and researchers from IPNL guided participants through the exercises, providing mentorship and answering questions in an interactive learning environment.
As the first edition of the summer school, the 2017 programme laid the groundwork for a recurring initiative that would grow in subsequent years. The positive response from participants affirmed the value of offering structured, hands-on GNSS training and demonstrated IPNL’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of researchers in the field of positioning, navigation, and location-based technologies.
