Dr. Guoquan Huang Visits IPNL

IPNL was pleased to host Dr. Guoquan Huang, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware, for a research visit and collaboration discussion. Dr. Huang leads the Robot Perception and Navigation Group (RPNG), which focuses on visual-inertial navigation systems, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and state estimation for mobile robots. His group has made notable contributions to efficient and consistent filtering-based approaches for visual-inertial odometry, as well as open-source tools that have been widely adopted in the robotics community.

During the visit, Dr. Huang presented his recent work on tightly coupled visual-inertial navigation and discussed challenges in achieving robust localization in GPS-denied and degraded environments. The exchange highlighted substantial overlap between RPNG’s expertise in visual-inertial SLAM and state estimation and IPNL’s research in multi-sensor fusion, GNSS/INS integration, and urban positioning. Both groups share a common interest in developing reliable navigation solutions under difficult conditions, whether in indoor environments, dense urban canyons, or other challenging scenarios.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to explore potential collaboration on sensor fusion frameworks that combine GNSS-based positioning with vision and inertial sensing. Such integrated approaches hold promise for improving navigation accuracy and robustness in environments where no single sensor modality can deliver reliable performance on its own. IPNL looks forward to continued academic exchange with Dr. Huang and the RPNG group.
