The 1st Workshop on Robot Meets GNSS and Ranging for Seamless Autonomy — co-organized by Prof. Li-Ta Hsu — was held at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2026 in Vienna, Austria, on 5 June 2026, and was a total success. The full-day program bridged two communities — satellite navigation / radio-ranging and robotics — to explore how positioning technologies like GNSS, UWB, and 5G NR can be tightly coupled with robot perception, planning, and control.
The workshop proposal had been selected from a record 152 submissions to ICRA 2026, of which only 67 (44%) were accepted. The international co-organizer team spanned The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Technical University of Munich, University of Bonn, Nanyang Technological University, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Chiba Institute of Technology, and Simon Fraser University. Prof. Hsu chaired the opening and closing sessions.
The day combined keynote talks — delivered by Dr. Taro Suzuki (Chiba Institute of Technology) and PolyU’s Dr. Weisong Wen — with 19 accepted-paper presentations and a poster session. The keynote speakers delivered excellent talks, and the poster presentations drew strong engagement; a Best Presentation Award and a Best Poster Award recognized the standout contributions. Among the accepted-paper presenters were Xuejie Hou (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and Chih-Chun Chen (Germany). An afternoon industry session gave the workshop’s sponsors and an associated start-up a stage to present their ranging and positioning technologies to the robotics audience.
With a packed room, lively discussion, and a strong slate of speakers and posters, the inaugural edition closed on a high note — and the organizers are already looking forward to the second edition.
