Prof. Li-Ta Hsu was invited to speak at the Hong Kong Motor Transport and Driving Industry Workers General Union (香港汽車交通運輸業總工會) forum titled 「智能駕駛浪潮下 汽車交通運輸業何去何從」 (The Intelligent Driving Wave: Where is the Motor Transport Industry Heading) on 12 July 2025, held at Hong Kong Wollongong College’s lecture hall.

The forum brought together over 100 representatives from government, industry, academia, and labor, addressing how autonomous driving technology will affect the Hong Kong transport workforce — job displacement, worker retraining, transition planning, and the need for worker protection in the autonomous-vehicle era.

Other speakers at the forum included:

  • Wu Qiubei, Chair, Federation of Hong Kong Industries
  • Ho Kai-ming, Deputy Secretary for Labour and Welfare
  • Chung Cheuk-ming, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Transport Department
  • So Tung-tse, Smart Mobility Director, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute
  • Lee Yiu-pui, Honorary Chair, Hong Kong Automobile Industry Association
  • Li Xiaoliang, General Manager, Shenzhen United Aircraft Technology

Prof. Hsu’s talk bridged the lab’s academic research on intelligent vehicle positioning (including the Vehicular Self-diagnosis System for Intelligent Transport line of work) with the practical concerns of the Hong Kong transport workforce. Union leader Lam Wai-kong emphasized at the forum that development “must be people-centric” and called for detailed worker placement and transition plans alongside any autonomous-vehicle rollout.

Engagements like this extend the lab’s public-community service line alongside the recurring 香港青少年航天創新大賽 (HK Youth Aerospace Innovation Competition) judging role.
